93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Grade: A-(90%) The past Mission Impossible films have been entertaining to watch but nothing really special. In a sense, the films have been average action movies. "Ghost Protocol", on the other hand, doesn't fit with the other films at all. Not only is "Ghost Protocol" a fantastic action film, it is probably the best in the series. The film starts off with an IMF agent being assassinated after finding a person of interest code-named "Cobalt". Jane (Paula Patton) and a new IMF field agent Benji (Simon Pegg) break Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) out of a Moscow prison to infiltrate the Kremlin and find any information about "Cobalt". But when someone blows their cover and blows up the Kremlin building, the United States activates "Ghost Protocol" which shuts down IMF who are now the prime suspects for blowing up the Kremlin in a global terrorist attack. With the help of intelligence analyst William Brandit (Jeremy Renner), the team decide to figure out who "Cobalt" is and who he is working for. The story itself is smart enough to keep the audience on edge even though it is not the strong point of the film. The film succeeds in the action parts of the film. They are done beautifully. Each action sequence is filled with great shootouts and hand-to-hand combat that really keeps the audience entertained. However, the combat isn't the only part of "Ghost Protocol" that works. As you know, the Mission Impossible series is known for it's fancy gadgets and how they are used to get out of tricky situations. Whether it is a gadget that changes room numbers or gloves that allows you stick to windows and walls instantly, this film is full of them. The situations themselves are great to watch. There is a scenario where Ethan climbs the Burj Dubai. the tallest building in the world, using the "sticky gloves" to reach higher levels. The scene is edgy as one mistake will cost Ethan his life. The cast also does a great job in the film. Tom Cruise is great as Ethan because he isn't in love with himself like the previous films. Simon Pegg is great as comic relief and as a newcomer to the Mission Impossible series. I was glad that Jeremy Renner was in this film since I loved his work in "The Hurt Locker" and "The Town" where he received Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nominations respectively. "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" is a great action film, hands down. It is fun to watch, sometimes edgy, and never boring. The action sequences are brilliantly directed and the scenarios are breath taking. If you are looking for a great action film, this is the film for you. "Ghost Protocol" is the best action film of the year.
