Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney Cut Off in London: Festival Organizers Pull the Plug as Legends Push Curfew

In London, rules are rules and curfews are curfews, even when Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney are together onstage in Hyde Park, bashing out Beatles classics and blowing the minds of thousands of people.

According to CNN, organizers of the Hard Rock Calling festival pulled the plug last night on Springsteen, who had brought McCartney out as a surprise guest during his encore. Backed by the E Street Band and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, the duo performed "I Saw Her Standing There" before making it most of the way through an epic "Twist and Shout."

They would have kept going, but at 10:40, the power cut out, leaving the Boss and Macca to shrug and leave the stage. The Hard Rock organizers had evidently promised London's Westminster Council that the show would end by 10:15, and while Springsteen -- who had already been going for more than three hours -- is known for marathon concerts and might conceivably have kept the party going well into the night, E Street guitarist Steven Van Zandt was furious about the decision.

"One of the great gigs ever in my opinion. But seriously, when did England become a police state?" he wrote in the first of several tweets.

"We break curfews in every country but only English cops needs to 'punish us' by not letting us leave until the entire crowd goes," he added. "Is there just too much fun in the world? We would have been off by 11 if we'd done one more. On a Saturday night! Who were we disturbing?"

Van Zandt later said there are "no grudges to be had," and he drew parallels between the aborted encore and the Beatles' famous 1969 performance atop the Apple headquarters.

"Ha! @raindogs70 just reminded me how the Beatles' rooftop concert ended," he tweeted. "Not much has changed in 43 years!"

Chris Christie Declines National Governors Association Leadership Role

WILLIAMSBURG, Va - In a surprising move, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) declined a long-planned move into the vice chairmanship of the National Governors Association this weekend.

Christie had been slated to take the vice chairman's post for several months but recently decided against doing so, according to several governors who attended the association's annual meeting. He cited time constraints, given his current role and planned 2013 reelection campaign, as the reason for his decision. Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin (R) was elected vice chairwoman Sunday morning after Christie asked her to take the post, while Delaware Gov. Jack Markell (D) was elected chairman. Under the NGA's bylaws, Fallin is in line to become chairwoman next year as part of a planned annual bipartisan rotation.

"He is in an election year. Governor Christie called me and asked if I would move into the vice chairman's slot," Fallin told HuffPost Sunday. "He will wait for a better time. He is a great leader of the NGA. I was pleased that he offered me the opportunity and he said that there were other things he wanted to take care of in his state."

Christie was reelected as a member of the NGA executive committee Sunday and will therefore remain a part of the association's leadership. Also on the executive committee are Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe (D), among others.

Markell confirmed that Christie declined based on the amount of time the two leadership positions would take over the next two years. He noted that in addition to Christie's duties in Trenton, he is seeking a second term as governor in 2013 and is currently vice chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

"He realized it was the time commitment, he told me this," Markell said. "Governor Fallin will be great."

Christie's spokesman could not be reached for immediate comment.

Christie attended parts of the NGA conference here on Saturday, including a closed-door lunch for governors and an RGA reception Saturday night, where he addressed the crowd. He was spotted walking into a closed-door meeting with Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) Saturday afternoon and did not answer questions from reporters. He did not attend Sunday morning's business session.

Fallin, who will oversee the NGA's finance committee and Center for Best Practices, said she plans to utilize the vice chairman's role to help promote best practices for state governments and forge a working relationship between the states and the federal government. A former congresswoman, Fallin said there are a variety of common issues the states can focus on, including the impact of federal budget cuts, health care costs, taxes, the federal debt ceiling and the alternative minimum tax.

"There are so many big issues going on nationally to build consensus on," she said.

This is not Fallin's first experience running a national group. During her three terms as Oklahoma's lieutenant governor, she chaired the National Lieutenant Governors Association and the Aerospace States Association.

Other governors said they understood Christie's decision to bow out of the NGA role due to time constraints. Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire (D), a former NGA chairwoman, told HuffPost that while the NGA staff handles much of the work involved, she had to put aside time to oversee the association and attend various NGA meetings.

"It is a lot of work," Gregoire said.

Bomb threat shuts Detroit-Canada tunnel

An international commuter tunnel connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, was closed for nearly four hours Thursday after a bomb threat was phoned in on the Canadian side. No explosives were found.

The Detroit Windsor Tunnel, a busy border crossing beneath the Detroit River, was shut after a duty-free shop employee on the tunnel's Canadian plaza reported receiving a call about a bomb threat.

The tunnel was eventually closed, tunnel Executive Vice President Carolyn Brown said. Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Detroit police and other agencies flooded the plaza and entrance on the tunnel's American side.

Bomb-sniffing dogs from several federal and local agencies were called in, said Donald E. Johnson, head of Homeland Security for Detroit police.

Johnson said the agency swept the tunnel "for any type of explosives." The 82-year-old tunnel stretches about a mile across the Detroit River, one of North America's busiest trade crossings.

After the call came in, officials at the tunnel followed protocol that's established between the tunnel operators and local emergency services officials in consultation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, tunnel officials said.

"We practice this," Brown said. "Once a year we do a full-blown exercise. We shut it down on a Sunday morning and we have all the first responders in. We simulate an accident or an incident."

Since 1998, there have been nearly $50 million in facility, safety and security upgrades at the tunnel, said Neal Belitsky, tunnel chief executive.

A deathly silence on the prostate cancer news front! ? THE "NEW ...

Gee! ? Didja notice? ? There really hasn?t been anything worth reporting in the prostate cancer news for the best part of the past 2 weeks. ? Seriously!

We could have scraped the barrel and come up with some pretty boring and repetitive ?stuff?, but ? as you know ? to the greatest possible extent we do our best to make sure we actually provide useful news ? as opposed to recycled press releases and other junk mail. There hasn?t been any useful news.

Now this could mean that someone has cured prostate cancer and we missed the press release. It could also mean that all the world?s prostate cancer researchers and treaters have taken an extended vacation in Antarctica. However, we have seen no evidence of either of these events. A third possibility is that everyone is so exhausted by all the quibbling over the precise implications of the Affordable Care Act and the guidance issued by the USPSTF is that they have run out of things to say. (This might be a good thing, of course!)

So ? while we wait for everyone to come up with some ?new? news that?s worth reporting, the one thing that we can tell you is that the Prostate Cancer Roundtable will be holding one of its regular get-togethers tomorrow in Washington, DC, right down the street from The Capitol, to discuss whatever we need to do about:

Ensuring continuing funding for the DoD Prostate Cancer Research Program
Educating men about when they definitely do (and perhaps don?t) need to be having PSA tests
Ensuring access to good quality care for those less fortunate than the fully ensured and
Pushing some other envelopes that continue to need pushing (such as just how much of the annual budget of the National Cancer Institute is really getting spent on research that benefits prostate cancer)

Our meeting are usually cordial ? although there are some strong differences of opinion in places. The good news is that we have finally managed to work out a way to collaborate on shared priorities without simultaneously tearing each others? throats out in public over the things we don?t all agree about.

Democrats block Senate vote on Obama tax plan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats blocked a Senate vote Wednesday on President Barack Obama's plan to extend expiring tax cuts for a year for everyone but the highest-earning Americans, as the two parties maneuvered to try embarrassing each other on one of the election year's foremost issues.

The move came just two days after Obama urged Congress to vote on his proposal. Democrats plan to take up the president's proposal before Congress' August recess.

Without action by lawmakers, wide-ranging tax cuts enacted a decade ago under President George W. Bush will expire on New Year's Day, an outcome that economists say would be a blow to the already weak economy.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., proposed votes on two amendments to a small business tax cut bill the chamber is debating. One was on Obama's plan, the other on a Republican alternative that would include top earners in the extended tax reductions.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., blocked the votes on both for now, saying the Senate would return to them after it finishes the small business tax measure. Aides said Democrats want to focus now on the small business measure, which they think is a strong issue for Democrats, and turn later this month to Obama's plan to extend the broader tax cuts.

"We'll get to the tax issues," Reid said. "That way we'll be able to talk in more detail about Governor Romney's taxes," a reference to Democratic demands that wealthy GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney release more of his income tax returns.

Obama would exclude families earning over $250,000 a year from the renewed tax cuts, saying they should contribute to deficit reduction.

Republicans say by excluding those people, the plan would in effect raise taxes on many business people and stifle job creation. Republicans said Reid blocked the votes to protect vulnerable Democrats seeking re-election this fall from having to vote on Obama's plan.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Obama's proposal "is not just an economic disaster. It's a political loser and they know it."

450K Yahoo Voice passwords posted online

A previously unknown hacker group has posted online the details of 450,000 user accounts and passwords it claims to have taken from a Yahoo server.

Ars Technica reports that the group, which calls itself D33DS Company, hacked into an unidentified subdomain of Yahoo's website where it retrieved unencrypted account details.

A Yahoo spokesperson in Singapore declined to comment.

The affected accounts appeared to belong to a voice-over-Internet-protocol, or VOIP, service called Yahoo Voice, which runs on Yahoo's instant messenger. The Voice service is powered by Jajah, a VOIP platform that was bought by Telefonica Europe BV in 2010.

The hackers' website where the original claim was made, d33ds.co, was not available later on Thursday. It was registered in February. Industry website CNET reported the hackers as saying the breach was intended as a "wake-up call and not as a threat" and that Yahoo's security was lax.

The Voice hack is one of several in recent months. The business networking service LinkedIn admitted last month that 6.4 million member passwords had been stolen from its website.

U.S. billionaire Leon Black is the mystery buyer who paid a record $120 million for Edvard Munch's masterpiece "The Scream" at Sotheby's in May, the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction, the Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday.

Citing several sources close to Black, a New York businessman and avid art collector, the newspaper said his intentions for the iconic painting and whether it would be loaned to a museum were unclear.

A spokesman for Sotheby's declined to comment on the report. Black could not be reached and his spokesman also declined to comment.

Black, the lead partner of Apollo Global Management and No. 330 on Forbes list of billionaires, sits on the boards of both the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.

A Sotheby executive took the winning bid at the May 2nd sale in New York. It was one of an initial group of seven bidders who drove the price up during a feverish auction.

"The Scream," Munch's masterpiece from 1895 depicting a bald figure with hands pressed to the head and swirling colors in the background, is one of the world's most famous paintings. Three other versions, including two that were stolen and later recovered, are in museums in Norway.

London Underground: NFC mobile payment technology 'too slow' for the tube

While it's tested the idea several times in the past, London's Tube system won't be getting mobile-based payment technology any time soon. Customer Experience Director Shashi Verma told GigaOM that existing NFC technology wasn't able to drop below the 500 millisecond barrier -- something which Transport for London demands from its high-churn Oyster card-based turnstiles. Verma added, "The concerns are only around NFC technology and not EMV. We are keen to see any progress the industry can make in this area." At least for the near-future, it looks like Brits will have to glue their NFC cards to their phones if they want that contactless payment look while journeying around London.

Congressional GOP: Obama's tax cut idea just politics

(Credit: AP) (CBS News) Congressional Republicans say President Obama's call for eliminating the Bush-era tax cuts for American families making $250,000 or more is old news - and that he is simply trying to change the subject from three months worth of disappointing jobs reports.

"Today's proposal is clearly based on a political calculus, not an economic one," asserted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in a written statement. "No one should see an income tax hike next year--not families, not small businesses and other job creators."

In Monday's address from the East Room at the White House, the President argued Congress should provide middle class families with more economic certainty by locking in their tax rates for next year now, rather than waiting until the end of the year when the reduced rates first passed by President George W. Bush in 2001 are set to expire.

However, he said, it is time for the top 2% of American earners to pay more. "I just believe that anybody making over $250,000 a year should go back to the income tax rates we were paying under (President) Bill Clinton -- back when our economy created nearly 23 million new jobs, the biggest budget surplus in history, and plenty of millionaires to boot," he said.

Republicans accused the president of trying to inflict a tax hike on small businesses that are already struggling in a sluggish economy. "President Obama's push to raise taxes on those earning more than $250,000 - including 940,000 business owners - could not come at a worse time," argued Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

Mr. Obama pointed out that 97 percent of small businesses would not be affected if the Bush-era tax cuts lapsed for those making more than $250,000 a year. "I'm not proposing anything radical here," he argued.

Congressional Democrats have been pushing for the same $250,000 dividing line for years, but in recent months they have retreated to a new position they hoped would get more traction with Republicans: an income cutoff of $1 million. "The $250,000 never made it," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi admitted in a press conference in May. "If we can get the million dollar and above people to pay their fair share, we get a lot of money... eighty one percent of the benefits of the Bush tax cuts go to the people making over a million dollars a year."

Republicans argued today's announcement puts Mr. Obama out of step with Democrats in Congress, some of whom have argued that no taxes should be raised when the economy is so fragile.

But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., signaled his support, saying he would discuss "next steps" with Democrats in coming days.

"I agree with President Obama that we should extend tax cuts for all American families up to the first $250,000 of income immediately," he said in a statement, adding "Republicans should stop holding these middle-class tax cuts hostage to extract more reckless giveaways for millionaires and billionaires."

Despite their insistence on creating certainty for taxpayers, both sides have stopped advocating that the tax cuts be made permanent or even long term. House Republican leaders have scheduled a vote later this month on renewing the current income tax rates for all earners for just one year, to give Congress time to focus on overhauling and simplifying the entire tax code.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh took the stage in North Korea during a concert for new leader Kim Jong Un, in an unusual performance featuring Disney characters.

Performers dressed as Minnie Mouse, Tigger and others danced and pranced as footage from "Snow White," ''Dumbo," ''Beauty and the Beast" and other Disney movies played on a massive backdrop, according to still photos shown on state TV.

The inclusion of characters popular in the West ? particularly from the United States, North Korea's wartime enemy ? is a notable change in direction for performances in Pyongyang. Actors and actresses also showed off new wardrobes, including strapless gowns and little black dresses.

In recent years, performances such as the "Arirang" mass games featured performers dressed as panda bears in homage to North Korean ally China.

This appears to be the first time Disney characters have been included in a major performance, though Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse have been popular among children for several years. Backpacks, pencil cases and pajamas imported from China often feature Disney characters, and stories such as "Dumbo" have been translated into Korean for North Korean schoolchildren. However, it is unusual to make such images a central part of a North Korean performance and to publicize it on state TV.

It was unclear whether the Disney characters were officially licensed. U.S. sanctions prohibit the import of North Korean goods to the United States, but do not ban the sales of American consumer products in North Korea unless they involve officials or companies on the U.S. Treasury Department's sanctions blacklist.

The performance was staged Friday by the Moranbong band, which was making its debut after being assembled by Kim himself, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said.

Kim, who took power after his father, longtime leader Kim Jong Il, died in December, has a "grandiose plan to bring about a dramatic turn in the field of literature and arts this year," KCNA said.

The dispatch made no mention of Disney characters, but said the concert included the traditional folk tune "Arirang" as well as a number of upbeat foreign songs.

Featuring Disney characters signals that Kim may be seeking to carve out a different image than his father and grandfather by easing restrictions on Western culture, said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korean studies professor based in Seoul, South Korea.

Kim, who is in his late 20s, has sought to project an image of youth, vitality and modernity.

Early Sunday, he led top officials in paying their respects to his grandfather, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, at the mausoleum where he lies in state. Kim died 18 years ago Sunday.

Earlier in the year, a quintet of accordionists became a YouTube sensation for their arrangement of "Take on Me," a pop song by the Norwegian band a-ha.

North Korea and the United States remain in a technical state of war because they signed a truce, not a peace treaty, after three years of fighting in 1953. The foes do not have diplomatic relations.
