As we approach the end of the school year, DU?s Programming Board has been busy planning a week of vibrant activities for May Days, which culminate tonight, Sunday May 27^th,?with GLOWfest, a philanthropy-based college music festival bringing the latest in sound and technology to colleges across the nation. The festival was founded by two fellow college students, Deuce Thevenow and Jack Shannon. Since its start, however, the GLOWfest team has expanded to welcome three new members who execute the organization?s marketing, cinematography and online representation aspects. GLOWfest partners with prominent college culture organizations including Remix-Nation.com and TheCampusStyle.com: the former an online community offering the best in Dubstep, House, and Mash ups; the latter delivering the hottest entertainment and fashion trends in campus culture. This season, GLOWfest?s lineup of artists includes:

Sebastian Ingrosso: Swedish DJ and member of the DJ super-group Swedish House Mafia. From the tender age of 14, Ingrosso began experimenting with music production in his father?s studio, releasing his first official remix on Mega Records at age 16. He is now the head of his own record label, Refune Records and just last year, was ranked #26 on the Top 100 DJ list by DJ Magazine. Ingrosso has brought his music to the U.S., Australia and Brazil, cultivating a wide fan base and reaching star status through mainstream collaborations with artists such as Sean Combs aka P.Diddy, and rock group MGMT. Ingrosso?s talent has earned him the main performance act for this season?s GLOWfest tour.

Otto Knows: the Stockholm-bred producer signed under Ingrosso?s Refune label. Little is known about this budding artist, but his tutelage under Avicii, a fellow Swedish DJ who?s collaborated with big names including Leona Lewis, Coldplay and Madonna, foreshadows a potential breakthrough in the music industry for Otto. This young artist will be the first opening act, pumping up the audience?s energy with his latest anthem ?Million Voices.?

Kap Slap: a.k.a. the ?mash-up king? is a student Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Performing every weekend, Kap Slap travels the country to give the nation a taste of his talent. He began his exploration into the music world in late 2009, experimenting with music-production as a hobby. A year later, he released his own independently-produced mash-up, resulting in a 25 show tour lasting nine months in 2011 during which he took the stage name ?Kap Slap? in reference to his Kappa Alpha society. As GLOWfest will be his first appearance in Colorado, he?ll be sure to bring his best in beats!

(Hujje): pronounced ?huge?, Hujje is an enigmatic Colorado-based duo composed of Josh McAdoo and Josh Rosenholtz, who will be featuring their newest single, ?Haunting Me? on the GLOWfest stage.

As the name may suggest, GLOWfest caters to the House genre, selecting artists specialized in electronic dance music (EDM). This genre originated in Chicago during the 80s, initially played in discos populated by African-Americans and Latinos. The underground music form quickly extended its reach to major U.S cities including L.A. and New York, until spanning into European territory. As a commercially-successful genre, House has fused with pop and dance music worldwide, benefitting from the support of a global music community. Since its initial success, House has grown into a veritable global phenomenon, promoted by critically-acclaimed artists such as Daft Punk, Benny Benassi and David Guetta. Today, this genre continues to thrive in both clubs and the mainstream pop scene. Most notably, the American music culture has been witnessing a merge between House and Hip-Hop, in which the latter?s instrumental composition is increasingly absorbing the former?s highly-electronic beats, giving rise to a dance-emphasized hip-hop revolution. Ever since he arrived here last August, Mr. Locke?s image as a ?regular guy? has won widespread admiration from Chinese bloggers and, it seems, irked the authorities.

The way he tried to get a discount at Starbucks with a coupon en route to Beijing, and carried his own backpack, is the polar opposite of the way aloof and pampered Chinese officials behave. So when Chinese citizens praise him, by implication they are criticizing their own leaders.

Lashing out at the US ambassador earlier this month for his role in protecting blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, the Beijing Daily published a strongly worded criticism of his ?little tricks.?

But readers? reactions to the editorial were so negative that within hours ?Beijing Daily? was a banned search word on the Chinese Internet, effectively closing down social media debate on the article.

That setback does not appear to have chastened Beijing Daily, however, and today the paper put its foot in it again.

Editors used the daily?s account on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like platform, to post a snide request, responding to another post about Locke?s wealth.

?Will Gary Locke please disclose his personal assets?? it asked.

The question was, perhaps, conceived as a sideways commentary on the lively debate currently underway in China about the need for top officials here ? often accused of corruption ? to disclose their wealth.

But of course, the editors simply revealed their ignorance. As scornful readers quickly informed them, Locke HAS disclosed his personal assets, just like every other member of the US government. (According to his 2010 declaration, he is worth between $1,356,025 and $7,615,999, which makes him the sixth richest person in the executive branch.)

?Of course Gary Locke?s personal assets have been disclosed,? read one comment on the Beijing Daily post. ?And what about the assets of those imperial officials [of ours]?

Within hours, Beijing Daily?s original post and all comments on it had been deleted from Sina Weibo, according to David Bandurski of Hong Kong University?s China Media Project, who tracked the incident in real time.

New search for International Genealogical Index (IGI) ? Grow Your ...

The IGI for Britain and Ireland is now searchable online at the new FamilySearch website.

The International Genealogical Index was compiled by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, the ?Mormons?) and originally known as the Computer File Index. At one time available on microfiche, for several years the IGI has been available online at the LDS FamilySearch website.

On the new FamilySearch site, parts of the IGI (and the British Isles Vital Record Index, an update to the IGI) have already been made available. The IGI for the whole world (nearly 670 million index records) is now searchable in what was the ?British Isles? section of the new site (and in the various other sections), but has been renamed ?United Kingdom and Ireland?.

Community Indexed IGI

The part that is searchable at present is what has been designated ?Community Indexed IGI?. The LDS says: ?The indexed data has been organized into the original collections from which it was transcribed and resides in the Historical Records system. To see a list of all collections available, choose ?All Record Collections? from the home screen. The Community Indexed search from this page searches ONLY the records that were part of the old IGI. Most of these collections have had many more records added to them. To do an exhaustive search for your ancestors, you should choose to use the search form on the home screen.?

Community Contributed IGI

Greyed-out at present is a search facility for the ?Community Contributed IGI?, regarding which the LDS says: ?For a short period of time, duplication in the IGI was reduced by removing records from the indexed data when these records were submitted by the community. To do an exhaustive search for your ancestor, you should choose to search the Community Contributed IGI and follow the process outlined on this page to determine if the record you find was part of an indexed collection.?

Despite the arrival of many other record collections online, it?s still worth searching the IGI for your ancestors, but remember ? it is an index, and you should always check the original record, which may well contain more information.

Men in Black 3 Movie Review

I saw the original Men in Black movie so long ago that my memories of the film might as well have been zapped with a neuralyzer (that's the memory-erasing device the guys use in the movie, for those of you who are also having trouble recalling the original). What I did retain is that the film was funny, fresh, and silly and that it didn't hold up very well for the 2002 sequel. With that in mind, I had low expectations for Men in Black 3, but the newest installment is just as much fun as the original, and it actually benefits from the 15-year time lapse.

The script for the film is one of its biggest assets and truly sets Men in Black 3 apart from its predecessors. The aliens are still alive and ickier than ever now that they're in 3D, but the story is more focused on the friendship between J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) and how it has evolved over the years. We learn early on that K has been keeping a secret from J all these years, and the mystery drives a wedge between the partners. Meanwhile, a treacherous alien named Boris the Animal (played to hilarious perfection by Flight of the Conchords's Jemaine Clement) breaks out of maximum-security prison and goes back in time to get revenge on K, who arrested him back in the '60s. The day that K had Boris locked up is the key to K's secret, so J heads on a mission back in time to save K and learn the truth.

Will Smith hasn't been in a movie since 2008's Seven Pounds, and I didn't realize I missed him until I found myself giggling all the way through Men in Black 3. His shtick is still the same (he's one-liners still consistent of dialogue like "Where did you come from? Planet damn?"), but you can't help but love Agent J as he bumbles through the '60s, desperately trying to sell his story to people who don't recognize him ? or believe him. You can tell that Smith feels completely comfortable in the role, and in the signature suit, which still looks perfect on him, as he hasn't aged a day.

Tommy Lee Jones is ever the reliable curmudgeon, but the film mines extra laughs when J travels to the '60s and meets a much younger version of his partner, played by Josh Brolin. Brolin looks enough like Jones to pass for him, but it's really his studied delivery and mannerisms that sell the performance. We also get some insight into how K has evolved over the years (he's always had a penchant for cowboy music, but he also used to be a bit of a dreamer), giving the film an extra layer to the enjoyable banter between J and K.

I'm not usually one to gush about 3D, but the special effects really come to life in Men in Black 3 in a way they never did in the first two movies. Not only do the aliens look creepier than ever, but the cartoonish feel of the film is taken to the next level with the 3D aspect, especially with the time-travel thrill-ride element. Much like with the 3D movies from my youth, I found myself shrinking in my seat just to avoid being too close to the alien goo, blood, breath, and beyond. Combined with the welcome return of Will Smith, you've got yourself a fun, mindless blockbuster.

Pressure on EU leaders to solve Greek crisis

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Europe's leaders gather in Brussels under mounting pressure to soften their tough-love approach to the weaker economies among them. With Greece locked in political chaos, much bigger Spain warns it can't keep afloat without help, as stock markets around the world tank over fears the leaders won't have the political will to act.

The summit will have to fight multiple fires: political uncertainty in Greece that could see it renege on commitments made to secure rescue loans; rising borrowing costs in Spain and Italy that could force them to seek bailouts; and sluggish growth across the region exacerbated by budget cuts meant to reassure markets about high debt levels.

"What we need is a decisive plan for Greece, and we need decisive plans to help get the European economies moving," British Prime Minister David Cameron said as he headed into the summit of leaders of the 27 countries that make up the EU, which includes the 17-member eurozone.

"But if we're not going to keep coming back and back to meetings like this we also need to deal with some of the longer-term issues at the heart of running successful single currency, having a bank that gets behind that single currency, having coherent long-term plans to make sure that single currency is coherent," he said.

Leaders have said that everything will be on the table, including a discussion about whether the countries that use the euro should spread the risk and borrow money jointly ? issuing so-called "eurobonds." This would mean every country could borrow funds at the same rate, substantially lowering the costs for the more indebted countries.

But expectations were low for agreement on concrete measures to boost growth and stability in the eurozone. Europe's main stock indexes plunged more than 2 percent. The euro fell 0.8 percent to $1.2561, its lowest in nearly two years.

On Tuesday, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development became the latest body to warn that the eurozone is at risk of falling into a "severe recession" and suggest that it slow the pace of austerity, or cost-cutting measures, in some countries.

That's exactly what many in Greece are asking for. The country has undertaken massive spending cuts and tax hikes to slash its deficit and rein in its debt ? and in exchange for the bailout loans that help keep it paying the bills. But Greece is now in its fifth year of recession, and many argue the country cannot hope for a recovery if it sticks to the deal.

In a recent election, neither of Greece's two main parties, both of which support the bailout deal, fared well. Instead, minor parties that are threatening to renege on those commitments saw their popularity surge. A new round of elections is set for June 17.

It is now a question of who will blink first. If the Greeks pick an anti-bailout government and renege on the terms of the bailout, the country could be forced into a messy exit of the euro. That could irreparably fracture the common currency and rattle global financial markets.

Some European countries are already hinting that Greece should be given better terms. Both the International Monetary Fund and the OECD, which monitors economic trends in developed economies, also are pushing for the demands on some countries to be eased.

European Union leaders are nonetheless presenting a united front and leaving it up to the Greek people to decide their future in Europe.

"Greece has to make an important choice on June 17, and their choice has to be European," French President Francois Hollande said as he headed into Wednesday's meeting. "France wants that the Greeks stay in the eurozone, and the Greeks must respect their commitments. At the same time, the eurozone must show it supports Greece."

That question will no doubt be central to Wednesday's discussions, although leaders have said no decisions would be made at the meeting ? which is technically only meant to set up a summit in late June.

Slow growth and uncertainty over Greece is making things worse for other struggling eurozone countries, like Spain, whose borrowing rates are high ? and rising ? because of fears that its government finances might be overwhelmed by the costs of rescuing its ailing banking sector.

In a meeting early Wednesday in Paris with Hollande, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy warned that his country couldn't continue much longer with its current high borrowing rates. High borrowing rates are at the heart of Europe's crisis and are what caused Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailouts.

"Europe has to come up with an answer," Rajoy said. "It is a must, because we cannot go on like this for a long time, with large differences when it comes to financing ourselves."

Rajoy suggested the European Central Bank resume some of its emergency measures, such as buying the bonds of weak countries, which has the impact of lowering countries' borrowing rates. The ECB has suspended the purchases because, as an independent body, it does not want to be seen supporting governments directly. Instead, it has given European banks massive amounts of cheap loans to bolster confidence in the financial system and allow banks to buy up their country's debt.

Leaders will also be addressing ways to buoy growth, like unleashing unused EU funds, increasing the financing of the European Investment Bank, which could then give loans to companies, and issuing "project bonds," debt that would be invested in large infrastructure projects.

Hollande said at his meeting with Rajoy that he will formally propose so-called eurobonds ? debt issued jointly by eurozone countries ? at Wednesday's summit.

Such bonds would distribute the risk of debt across the whole eurozone. That would mean every country would borrow at the same rate ? giving financially weak countries a huge discount over their current rates. Eurobonds could eventually replace at least some of a country's nationally issued debt, though countries would likely continue to meet the rest of their funding needs by going individually to the bond markets, as they do now.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is staunchly opposed to such a move because it would reduce the pressure on heavily indebted governments to heal their finances and force Germany to borrow at higher rates.

"I believe that they are not a contribution to foster growth in the eurozone because the very similar interest rates which we had over many years, have basically led to grave wrong developments," she said as she headed into Wednesday's meeting.

So, instead of spending valuable resources on health care and education, he has to go with sea walls and other protective measures. So, through this example, we get a disturbing look at what all of our futures may be like if we do not change our ways very soon.(With the use of some great shots, the Maldvies do seem like something out of speculative fiction.) If our behavior affects all others across the globe, then why can't the butterfly flap its wings in the opposite direction, which is where Nasheed comes in, not only in speaking across the world(I'm not recommending invoking World War II usually in speehces, but if you have to, mention Czechoslovakia), but also in proposing to make his country entirely carbon neutral in 10 years by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind, making the Maldives an example for the rest of the world. This is harder than it sounds with the economic interests of countries like China and India making things especially difficult with a memorable climax at the climate conference at Copenhagen in 2009. But sadly, Nasheed did not have that much time as he was ousted in a threatened coup in February of this year.
