Progress on Immigration? ? The Feehery Theory

Mar30

By John Feehery

??????????? I admit it.?? I am a squish on immigration.

?

I am a big fan of legal immigration and I am a realist on illegal immigration.

?

While I don?t necessarily love amnesty programs because I think they encourage more illegal immigration, I believe that if you have been here for twenty years and that you have been a good and productive citizen and if you have a bunch of family here, you ought to be given a quick path to citizenship without being forced to leave the country.

?

I know there are haters out there who hate that position (and probably hate me as a result), but I don?t really care about the haters.

?

Of course, I am not an elected politician either.? And if you are an elected politician, especially if you are a Republican, you have to care about the haters, because they tend to vote on issues like immigration.

?

The Republican Party finds itself in a bit of a quandary when it comes to this issue.? They desperately want to do better among Hispanic voters, but they can?t seem to come to grips with the necessity of softening its position on immigration.

?

Marco Rubio knows better than most about how this issue cuts.? Like his predecessor Mel Martinez, Rubio is a Cuban and a rising star in the GOP who wants to take some common-sense steps forward on the legal immigration.

?

Mel focused on this issue when he was Chairman of the Republican National Committee, and he actually worked with John McCain and Ted Kennedy to come up with a bipartisan plan.? The result?? Donations to the RNC dried up, and Martinez was viciously attacked from the right-wingers.

?

According to press reports, Rubio is picking up the dropped baton from Martinez and running with it.? He is working with Jon Kyl and Kay Bailey Hutchison to develop a Republican version of the Dream Act, and to include other provisions that will prop up the American economy by attracting top talent and investment from overseas.

?

I salute Mr. Rubio for his efforts and I hope that the Republican Party has learned that it can?t just hope that Hispanic voters vote for the GOP because President Obama has done nothing on immigration (and actually nothing to help Hispanics in this country).

?

The Republican Party can adopt both a pro-immigrant philosophy and a pro-law and order philosophy.? It can welcome immigrants to this country who obey the law and plan on being productive members of society, while being tough on those immigrants who join gangs or promote drug-trafficking.? It can promote policies that make it easier for immigrants to assimilate and get greater access to the American dream.? But it can also work to make certain that immigrants are not exploited at slave-labor wages and make it harder to illegal immigrants to get welfare benefits.

?

And it can promote policies that keep new engineering and computer science doctoral students in the country instead of requiring them to move back home to our competitors.

?

I think that is where Rubio is trying to take the GOP, and for that I give him a big thumbs up.

Take Steps To A Healthier You ? CBS Philly

Sponsored Content ? By Lanette Kovachi, MS, RD

Here are some simple tips to help you get back on track and keep your body healthy:

1) Curb the calories. Cutting out 100- 250 calories each day can result in a 1-2 pound weight loss per month and help prevent future weight gain. Trim down on portion sizes, compare food labels and choose lower calorie foods, and replace sodas, specialty coffee and fruit drinks with calorie-free alternatives like water and diet drinks.

2) Desert the desserts. Desserts like cakes, cookies, pies and other sweets are often high in fat, sugar and calories. If you are a dessert lover cut your dessert portion in ?, set a side one or two nights a week to have a special treat, or try a lower calorie dessert like fresh chopped fruit.

3) Choose the right fats. To reduce saturated fat and trans fat, replace butter and stick margarine with liquid vegetable oils or trans fat-free tub margarine. Limit foods that list ?partially hydrogenated oil? or ?hydrogenated oil? as one of their ingredients.

4) Go for the grains. Whole grains are packed with fiber and nutrients and are associated with weight control. Choose breads, cereals and crackers that list whole grains as their first ingredient ? like whole wheat, whole-grain oats, rye and barley.

5) Feel good with fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in disease-fighting nutrients, are cholesterol-free and are naturally lower in calories, fat and sodium. Include at least two to three fruit or vegetable servings with every meal. At breakfast, top cereal or yogurt with fresh fruit and have a glass of 100% fruit juice. At lunch have a large colorful salad or veggie sticks on the side. For dinner include a side salad and a cup of cooked veggies. For optimal nutrition make sure to select a variety of fruits and vegetables.

6) Count calcium. Choose three calcium rich foods to eat per day. Try calcium-fortified orange juice at breakfast, low-fat yogurt or cheese for a snack and low-fat milk with dinner.

7) Walk, walk, walk. Make a 30-minute brisk walk part of your daily routine. You already make it a point to do other things necessary for your health, like eating, sleeping and brushing your teeth. Daily exercise is just as important. If you have a busy schedule try breaking it up into two 15-minute walks ? one before work and one during lunch.

8) Cut the couch potato routine. During your favorite TV show don?t sit still ? use this time to try different weight bearing exercises. Weight-bearing exercises help burn calories, build muscle strength and maintain bone density.

9) Slash the salt. Instead of using salt to season meats, vegetables and pasta try one of the many delicious salt-free seasoning blends available.

The path to personalized cancer treatment

Thursday, March 29, 2012

In the largest study of its kind, researchers have profiled genetic changes in cancer with drug sensitivity in order to develop a personalised approach to cancer treatments. The study is published in Nature on Thursday 29 March 2012.

The team uncovered hundreds of associations between mutations in cancer genes and sensitivity to anticancer drugs. One of the key responses the team found was that cells from a childhood bone cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, respond to a drug that is currently used in the treatment of breast and ovarian cancers. The lowered toxicity of this treatment may mean it is a safer alternative therapy for children and young adults with this aggressive cancer.

There is an intimate relationship between the way a drug works and the genetic changes present in cancers. This study found that sensitivity to most anti-cancer drugs is influenced by mutations in cancer genes and establishes the utility of using large-scale studies to identify these associations and build them into improved patient treatment.

"Our key focus is to find how to use cancer therapeutics in the most effective way by correctly targeting patients that are most likely to respond to a specific therapy," explains Dr Mathew Garnett, first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We studied how genetic changes in a panel of >600 cancer cell lines effects responses to 130 anti-cancer drugs, making it the largest study of this type to date."

The team identified biological markers of drug sensitivity to a broad range of cancer drugs. Most of the cancer genes analysed, including those that are not known directs targets of the drugs tested, were associated with either sensitivity or resistance to at least one of the drugs analysed.

"Our research has taken us down unknown paths to find associations that are completely novel," says Dr Cyril Benes, senior author from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre. "We have identified hundreds of associations, many of which we still don't fully understand. We identified a novel indication for the use of PARP inhibitors, anti-cancer drugs currently used to treat breast and ovarian cancers, for the treatment of Ewing's sarcoma."

Ewing's sarcoma is a cancer of children and young adults with a 15% five-year survival rate in patients where the cancer has spread or they have relapsed after chemotherapy. The use of PARP inhibitors could represent a new treatment option for Ewing's sarcoma patients and these compounds will now be tested in clinical trials to assess their therapeutic benefit.

"Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies are already being translated into the large-scale detection of cancer gene mutations in the clinic," says Dr Ultan McDermott, senior author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "There is a compelling need to identify, in a systematic fashion, whether observed mutations affect the likelihood of a patient's response to a given drug treatment. We have therefore developed a unique online open-access resource for the research and medical community that can be used to optimize the clinical application of cancer drugs as well as the design of clinical trials of investigational compounds being developed as treatments."

The team hopes their open-access database will be an important resource for the cancer research community and which will ultimately lead to improved treatments for patients. This research program is a unique Wellcome Trust funded 5-year collaboration between The Cancer Genome Project at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Center for Molecular Therapeutics, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.

"Our work is helping to move cancer therapeutics away from the conventional tissue-based treatment to a more molecular-based treatment," says Professor Daniel Haber, senior author from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre. "The next steps for this collaborative project are to evaluate some of the key findings using tumour samples and test new candidate therapeutic strategies in clinical trials so we can hopefully improve the way we treat cancer patients. We are continuing our screening effort, in particular using drug combinations to discover innovative and better therapeutic options."

Zimmerman accused of domestic violence, fighting with a police officer

Orange County Sheriff's Office

George Zimmerman is pictured in this booking photo taken in July 2005.

By msnbc.com staff

Court documents obtained by msnbc.com on Tuesday evening show that George Zimmerman, who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, went to court in 2005 and 2006 for accusations of domestic violence, tussling with a police officer and speeding.

The three incidents took place in Orange County, Fla.

  • In 2005, Zimmerman, then 20, was arrested and charged with ?resisting officer with violence? and ?battery of law enforcement officer,? both which are third-degree felonies. The charge was reduced to ?resisting officer without violence? and then waived when he entered an alcohol education program. Contemporaneous accounts indicate he shoved an officer who was questioning a friend for alleged underage drinking at an Orange County bar.
  • In August 2005, Zimmerman?s ex-fiancee, Veronica Zuazo, filed a civil motion for a restraining order alleging domestic violence. Zimmerman counterfiled for a restraining order against Zuazo. The competing claims were resolved with both restraining orders being granted.
  • In December 2006, Zimmerman was charged with speeding. The case was dismissed when the officer failed to show up in court.

On Feb. 26, in Sanford, Fla., Zimmerman fatally shot Martin, who was unarmed. Zimmerman, 28, a neighborhood watch volunteer, told police that he shot in self-defense and that Martin attacked him, breaking his nose.

Read the Feb. 26 incident report

Outraged, Martin?s parents and their supporters have called for Zimmerman?s arrest. The case has drawn national attention and thousands have rallied across the country for Martin?s parents? cause.

Bill Lee, the Sanford police chief, has temporarily stepped down from his post. The FBI and Department of Justice and the state of Florida are investigating.

Zimmerman's attorney, Craig Sonner, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the court appearances and his voicemail box was full.

Two Kinds Of Men And Women Will Survive ... - News and Society

Forecast For Tomorrow, a planet recognized trend forecaster, has currently warned the economic collapse they see coming and explained it will only be suited to 2 kinds of people today, or personalities.

As globe recognized trend forecasters, they have earned a distinguished reputation in the market by means of correct, insightful forecasting of world-shaking events just before they take place. Their most up-to-date evaluation is calling for an all out economic collapse, that most of the people won?t have the ability to survive. Except for those who belong to two particular groups of men and women.

The two sorts of individuals that will do well will likely be those that ?take? and those that ?produce?. The takers will likely be those that force themselves to take what they can from those which can be stockpiling food as well as other goods. The reason is the fact that nearby law enforcements are now not reporting smaller petty crimes. So there?s absolutely nothing stopping these takers coming and stealing from you in their hour of need.

When push comes to shove the producers is going to be in a position to manage all situations if an all out economic collapse arrives. Clearly there will not be a mad-max like circumstance, but if you?re generating points, or have the potential to produce, and grow food and items needed day to day, you have got a very fantastic opportunity of weathering the storm when it arrives.

There will constantly be a want for construction, sewing, mechanics, computer technicians, medical experts, organizers and communicators, writers, artists and musicians, cooks and food preparation, in addition to many other skills which will constantly be in demand in society.

Chuck Wissinger

?In terms of media, I find myself increasingly drawn to clay mixed with other materials -- welded steel, wood, stone, bone, found objects, etc. The use of juxtaposed materials is often more responsive to creative impulse than clay used alone. This is particularly the case when trying to create a sense of dialectic or opposition as is central to my work. Clay continues, with its pleasures and pain, to be my preferred medium. Frustration with its cumbersome nature is outweighed by clay?s inherent ability to capture raw tactile energy. I enjoy walking into new situations cold without preconceived ideas, sketches, tools etc. to see what happens."

The work of artists Charles and Fulden Sara-Wissinger opened at Coastal Bend College Simon Michael Art Gallery in Beeville this month. The collection, which includes drawing, paintings, sculptures, and earthenware, showcases the diverse work of this husband and wife team.

Charles Wissinger, an art professor at Texas A&M University ? Kingsville, pointed out the Mesoamerican symbolism found in his drawings. ?I am intrigued by North American cultures interaction with nature and our simplistic understanding of what it is to be human,? he said.

Wissinger is a graduate of Ohio State University, Columbus, with a Masters Degree of Fine Arts in Ceramics with a minor in sculpture and photography-cinematography. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Pa.

His work has been exhibited across the country and in Canada, Mexico and Turkey. He has been a part of international shows in Scandinavia, including the 1994 International Olympics Ceramics Exhibition in Lillehammer, Norway.

?If I never made another image it would matter very little. Stature gained, as an artist, however, has allowed me to affect my world in quite meaningful ways. As an artist I can serve as healer, community builder, and an ambassador. With my art ego checked and no axes to grind, I, as an artist, can move through our segmented society more easily than most, to function as a bridge builder. This requires every bit as much creativity as the self-indulgent act of art making,? Wissinger said.

Fulden Sara-Wisinger

"I attempt to reflect this in my work by fusing together visual elements that have opposing qualities thus creating harmony out of dissonance. Circumstance dictated that I live in a very controlled closed environment for much of the time. With two working parents, no close relatives, and few friends I spent much of my time alone overlooking the magic below, the chaotic jostle of customs, cultures and religions rubbing against each other."

Fulden Sara-Wissinger is an adjunct professor at TAMUK. She also teaches at Coastal Bend College ? Kingsville Campus. She earned an MFA in 3D Studio Art from the University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg and a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design from Marmara University in Istanbul.?Some of my most vivid memories are of emerging from my sheltered home to walk hand-in-hand with my parents through Istanbul?s world famous bazaars. I became swept up in the sensual soup of sights, smells and sounds ? a magical world far removed from my seven-story perch. It has taken quite some time and living half a world away for me to realize just how profoundly this dichotomy has shaped me,? Sara-Wissinger said.

Sara-Wissinger worked as a graphic designer in Turkey before becoming a studio artist. ?Quite by accident and very much to my surprise, I found myself gravitating to clay,? she explained. ?For me, clay most directly captures fluid energy while requiring patient methodical manipulation. Strong texture against clean edges creates a sense of tension. I view this juxtaposition of rigid geometry and animated organic as a metaphor for the interplay of opposing forces that enlivens Turkish Culture.?

She said her heritage is ?European mixed with Byzantine and Seljuk-Ottoman Culture.? Her experiences have heavily influenced her work. ?As a person of mixed culture, I am fascinated by other cultures. Living in one of the world?s most exotic cultural crossroads created in me a delight for such diversity, and a hunger to venture into the world to experience ever more,? she said.

?Wissinger & Wissinger? will close on April 12. The Simon Michael Art Gallery is located in the Frank Jostes Visual Arts Building at Coastal Bend College in Beeville. For more information on upcoming shows and CBC?s visual arts programs, go to www.coastalbend.edu/finearts.

Santorum: Romney 'worst Republican' to face Obama

(AP) ? An agitated Rick Santorum on Sunday called Mitt Romney "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama" even as it appears the former Massachusetts governor is on pace to clinch the party's nomination in June.

Santorum later lashed out at reporters, using a profane word as he accused them of "distorting" his speech.

Santorum told voters that Romney is "uniquely disqualified" to be the GOP's presidential pick and urged his supporters to stand with him even as he faces an increasingly improbable pathway to the nomination. Santorum said "the race isn't over until the people of Wisconsin sing," and urged them to give his underfunded, underdog campaign a chance to derail Romney.

"Pick any other Republican in the country. He is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama," Santorum said at an evening rally near Racine.

Santorum later tried to clarify that he was talking only about Romney's ability to campaign against the national health care law championed by Obama and the Democrats. But the candidate's temper flared when he was pushed by reporters.

"On the issue of health care. That's what I was talking about, and I was very clear about talking about that. OK?" Santorum told reporters who asked him about the scathing criticism. "Come on, guys, don't do this. I mean, you guys are incredible. I was talking about Obamacare, and he is the worst because he was the author of Romneycare."

Pressed by a reporter from The New York Times, Santorum said: "Quit distorting my words. It's bulls---."

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams, who attended the event, said Santorum was "panicking in the final stages of his campaign."

"Rick Santorum is becoming more desperate and angry and unhinged every day," Williams said. "He sees conservatives coalescing around Mitt Romney and he's rattled by the backlash caused by his suggestion that keeping Barack Obama would be better than electing a Republican."

Campaigning throughout Wisconsin, which has its primary April 3, Santorum hammered Romney as a candidate conservatives should not trust. He seized on a Romney adviser's comment last week that the race's dynamic will change when the GOP settles on a nominee, likening it to an Etch A Sketch toy.

"I have not written my public policy pronouncements on an Etch A Sketch. They are written on my heart," Santorum said in a Fond du Lac bowling alley.

"Gov. Romney has said in response to the Etch A Sketch comment that he wants to assure all of you ? he wants to assure that he will run as a conservative in the fall. Let me assure you, that I'm not going to run as a conservative. I am a conservative."

Santorum also called Romney "the one Republican in America who actually authored the blueprint for Obamacare."

"We have a candidate who is running against me who is uniquely disqualified," he said.

But that candidate is better organized and has a serious advantage on his way to clinching the GOP nomination with 1,144 delegates before the party meets for its convention in Tampa, Fla. Romney has won 568 delegates to Santorum's 273, according to The Associated Press' tally.

Santorum would need 74 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination before the national convention in August, and he acknowledges he is unlikely to keep pace with Romney in spending.

"I can't outspend him in Wisconsin. No way," Santorum told supporters here. "But you can outwork him. We can do this."

Finding The Right Travel Tips Just Got Easier | Oregon Attractions

The stress of planning a vacation actually makes some people think twice about taking one. In this day and age, traveling requires a lot of advance decisions to be made for both enjoyment and security. Use the advice here to smoothly plan out enjoyable trips and vacations.

Before you head further and look the whole guide, if you need tips to get the best local guide to go on vacation, You might want to read some local travel blogs or search in the forums to get real advices from travelers like you. As an example if you?re adventurous and want to travel in Italy, Make sure you have a look inside the insiders walking blog where they suggest some ideas here so you?re able to read local travel stories and contact the local tour providers to secure a cheaper price and maximize your experience.

Force yourself to stay awake at least until early evening in order to acclimate better after you change time zones. Even if you are tired, going to bed too early can prolong jet lag by keeping your body in your home time zone. The sooner you adjust to your local time, the sooner your jet lag will leave you.

Booking online is a great way to start your vacation planning. For help planning your trip, let a travel site help you. It is simple to find a hotel, schedule a flight or choose a rental car all while using your computer. You can research your destination and read reviews of potential lodgings. In addition, these sites can offer you some tremendous savings opportunities, including package deals and discounts for travel plans made at the last minute.

Make sure that even your children are carrying some form of ID and emergency contact info. If you are in an area that still has pay phones, give the kids enough money to use one in case of emergency. A current photo of each child should be carried with you at all times in case they get lost and the police need to know what they look like.

Prepare your children for the rituals of airport security. Prior to arriving at the airport, let them know exactly what will occur during the security screening process. Stay near your child while going through the checkpoint, and have an adult go through first to demonstrate the process to recalcitrant children.

Consider rolling clothes before putting them in your luggage rather than folding them. You will save some space in your luggage by rolling your clothes. You can always unroll your clothes and then fold them upon reaching your destination. This will decrease how many luggage items you need.

For a fun day trip or a last-minute weekend getaway, don?t assume you need to hop on a plane. There are many things to do in your own home state or town. Remaining in a local area will support the community and allow you to save your money. You can find fun activities you didn?t even know existed.

Whenever you go camping, but most importantly when you go hiking, you must carry local maps along with you. You?ll need a compass to make sense of the maps, but a GPS would be the ultimate safety tool.

Always take along your children?s own car seats if you are bringing them on a trip and planning to rent a car. Use your own car seat if renting a vehicle.

Arriving the night before is essential. Staying over at a hotel that customarily allows their patrons to leave their vehicles there during their cruise is a smart move. If you cannot find any details about parking, ask the hotel staff what their policy is.

When you are trying to maximize your travel enjoyment, do not underestimate the power of weather. Always check what the weather forecast will be at your destination. If the weather is uncooperative you may need to make last-minute changes to your itinerary.

You need to wear comfortable shoes when you take an airplane; it?s preferable if you are able to slip your feet out of them easily. When you go through security checks, you will be required to take them off. Comfort over style is paramount when traveling. There is a bit of walking at the airport, but also a lot of sitting, so they don?t need to have a great deal of support. Wearing sandals like flip flops or Crocs is a great way to stay comfortable on your flight.

To make planning your next vacation a breeze, book your trip online. Travel websites can assist you in the planning of your trip?s itinerary. You can line up hotels, rental cars, and flights using your computer! Reviews and photographs of hotels are available on the web. These sites offer fabulous deals for online trip planning, like last minute traveling discounts.

When hiking or camping, always carry a map of the area on your person, even if you?re only leaving camp for a few minutes. You should carry a compass, or even a GPS, so you can navigate in unfamiliar territory. Make sure you know how to use them!

Make sure your dog is easily accustomed to new places if you plan on traveling together. Your dog should respond to your commands and be comfortable on a leash. Keep them on a leash whenever you are traveling. Only you can protect your pet on vacation.

When traveling by air it is important you have a plan. Since major airports are usually in big cities, getting there might take forever when you get caught in heavy traffic congestion. Pack your bags the night before you leave on your trip. It is crucial to have everything planned out in advance. With good preparation, you are sure to make your flight and not have to worry about missing it.

As you saw, there are a variety of ways to make your trip less stressful and more fun. Start comparing destinations and making a list to pack for your next vacation.

Obese Women at Higher Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence: Study ...

FRIDAY, March 23 (HealthDay News) ? Overweight and obese breast cancer patients are at increased risk for recurrence of the disease, a new study finds.

The findings ? which held true even though chemotherapy doses were adjusted for weight ? provide further evidence that lifestyle factors can influence cancer patient outcomes, according to Dr. Jennifer Ligibel, a medical oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.

She and her colleagues analyzed data collected from 1,909 breast cancer patients. Of those women, about 1 percent were underweight, 33 percent were normal weight, 33 percent were overweight and 33 percent were obese.

The researchers examined the link between body-mass index (a measure of body fat based on weight and height) and relapse-free survival and overall survival. The findings are slated for presentation Friday at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Vienna.

?Several other studies have shown that being overweight or obese at the time that a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer is linked to a higher risk of recurrence. However, questions have been raised in the past whether obese women were receiving relatively lower doses of chemotherapy due to their weight. Our study mandated that each patient received a chemotherapy dose adjusted to her weight, so these results suggest that treatment factors are not responsible for the differences in recurrence rates seen in heavier women,? Ligibel said in a conference news release.

?We found that BMI was related to both relapse-free survival and overall survival; for example, the 10-year relapse-free survival of a patient who was overweight was 70 percent; compared with 65 percent for one who was obese,? she noted.

Ligibel concluded: ?Obesity is a modifiable factor, and although there is not yet enough evidence to say with certainty that losing weight or exercising more regularly will decrease the risk of breast cancer recurrence, there are consistent links between lifestyle factors such as diet, weight and physical activity patterns and breast cancer prognosis. If future studies show that making changes in lifestyle behaviors for women with early breast cancer will improve survival rates, then lifestyle interventions may one day become a standard part of breast cancer care.?

According to conference chair David Cameron, a professor at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, these are important findings for women with breast cancer but ?we need to recognize that the reason overweight women have poorer outcomes is not clear,? he said in the news release.

?There are a lot of health reasons why overweight women should try and get back to a normal weight, but this is not always easy, and as the authors acknowledge, we don?t yet know that losing weight after a breast cancer diagnosis will make a difference,? he noted.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Angry Birds Space billed as an educational tool. Really?

Launched Thursday, Angry Birds Space, the latest installment to the wildly popular Angry Birds video game franchise, is being billed as a tool for educating people about physics. How scientifically accurate is the physics in the game?

With over 700 million downloads,?the first Angry Birds game is a testament to the appeal of simplicity. The much-anticipated sequel, Angry Birds Space, which launched on Thursday, looks just as simple, and as freakishly enjoyable.?

But there is one big difference between the original and its high-flying sequel: Angry Birds Space is being billed?as a tool for educating people about physics.

The original Angry Birds allows players to slingshot a variety of ornery avians at oblate green pigs. The pigs have absconded with birds' eggs, hence their anger.

Angry Birds Space incorporates an element of interplanetary gravity. The developers collaborated with NASA to "teach people about physics and space exploration through the internationally successful puzzle game," according to NASA's recent press release.

Peter Vesterbacka, the chief marketing officer of Rovio, which made the game, said in the release that the company couldn't "wait to work with [NASA] on creating more compelling educational experiences."

NASA and Rovio aren't the only organizations touting Angry Birds Space as an educational tool. The Examiner, InformationWeek, and other media outlets have described the game in much the same way.

But is that really true? Is there any educational value in Angry Birds Space??

Before we explore this question, though, let's admit that Angry Birds Space is a game, foremost, and a fun one at that. Perhaps there doesn't have to be any more of a justification to play it, and maybe the excuse of educational value is?unnecessary.

And let's give credit where it's due. The claim that the new game appropriates the concept of microgravity ? the kind of low gravity that affects objects in orbit, like at the International Space Station ? is pretty much true. Also, the game illustrates how objects ? in this case, the birds ? launched in a straight line will curve their trajectories in the presence of massive bodies. So far, so good.?

But when you add audible TNT detonations in space, plants subsisting without carbon dioxide on otherwise forlorn moons, an inexplicable presence of wood and concrete, and the stormy purple vortex at the stroyline's beginning, the educational value of the game falls off dramatically.

The game exhibits more serious problems too, namely, physical impossibilities. Rhett Allain, Associate Professor of Physics at Southeastern Louisiana University and Blogger for wired.com, pointed some of these out.

In the game, the slung birds enter the gravitational fields of tiny pocked moons and plummet toward them. According to Newton's Law of Gravitation, the moons must be extremely massive in order for the birds to move as fast as they do. But the moons aren't all that much larger than the birds themselves. This means that they would have to be extremely dense. Allain calculates one moon's density to be about 7 billion kg/m3 , closer to the density of a white dwarf than that of a moon.

Also, if the moons had real gravity, then all objects caught in their fields ? which in the game are portrayed as glowing pellucid disks ? would accelerate towards the surface. It's hard to say if the birds follow this law, since they go through so many other inexplicable motions. But the debris they collide with clearly do not. Allain demonstrated that in the game, rocks actually slow down during their free-fall to the moons' surfaces.

And why are those moons sitting still, exactly? In space, they would not only gravitationally interact with the wayward birds, but also with each other. If intentional, it was clever for the developers of Angry Birds Space to?lock the moons in place. The conundrum of three or more bodies gravitating towards one another still perplexes physicists. They call it the n-body problem. Obviously, n-body gravitation occurs, but we have no way to theoretically explain it. Even the current models that can approximate this motion are astoundingly math-intensive.?

Criticizing an extremely fun and successful video game for its inaccuracy is easy, if not curmudgeonly. But if you're going to look to Angry Birds Space for educational value, you should know that its physics is about as accurate as its ornithology.?

Houston, We May Have A Fake: Pro CGI Experts Cast Serious Doubt On Human BirdWings Flight

screen-shot-2012-03-20-at-8-49-06-amWell, the evidence is mounting, and it looks like I may have let my eagerness for the possibility of self-propelled flight (of the Wii-sensored flapping variety) get in the way of reality. Yesterday, we covered Jarno Smeets, a.k.a. The Human BirdWings guy, supposedly taking off on self-built wings on a flight that he claimed spanned over 100 meters. However, the CGI experts are calling BS on the semi-self-propelled flight. And while this still doesn't prove it's a hoax directly -- in fact, Jamie Hyneman of MythBusters yesterday laid out an explanation of how it could be plausible using modern tech -- it sure isn't looking good for old Jarno.

30 Indonesian women founded Madagascar

The land of freaky animals and amazing biodiversity, Madagascar was also one of the last places to be settled by humans. And new research suggests that didn't happen until about 1,200 years ago.

The colonization might even have been an accident, the researchers say. A small group of Indonesian women settled the island in one fell swoop, possibly making their way there after their trading vessel capsized.

"The unusual thing about this island is Madagascar is a long way away from Indonesia. ? It was also settled very recently; by this time, most of the world had already been settled," study researcher Murray Cox, of Massey University in New Zealand, told LiveScience. "We are talking about an entire culture being trans-located across the Indian Ocean."

Mad about Madagascar
Previous genetic research showed that, surprisingly, instead of coming from Africa, the people living on the island off the east coast of Africa seem to have come from Indonesia, another island nation a quarter of the world, or some 3,500 miles (about 5,600 kilometers), away.

"What we haven't known is exactly how that happened. When did those people arrive and how did they arrive?" Cox said.

To find out, Cox and his colleagues analyzed genes from the mitochondria of 300 native Madagascans and 3,000 Indonesians. Mitochondria are the cell's energy factories, but they are special because their genes are inherited only from our mothers.

These genes showed a clear similarity between the Indonesian and Madagascar genomes. To find out how long ago and how many Indonesian settlers there were when the island's population was founded, the team ran various computer simulations that started out with different founding populations at different times until the results matched their real-life data. The researchers found that the island was most likely settled by a small population of about 30 women, who arrived in Madagascar around 1,200 years ago. Ninety-three percent (28) of these women were Indonesian, and the other 7 percent (two individuals) were African.

Almost all native Madagascans are related to these 30 women, they found.

What about the men?
Previous research on Madagascans, specifically on the Y sex chromosome (passed from father to son), indicates that the males of this founding population were also from Southeast Asia, though they don't know how many there were.

"You see there are Indonesian Y chromosomes in the population," Cox said. "We know that both Madagascan men and women come from Indonesia, we just don't know exactly how many men. Our evidence suggests it's also a small number."

Archaeological evidence suggests that these few settlers quickly set down roots: "You have this rise and spread very rapidly to take over the island," Cox said, "perhaps in the matter of a few generations." [Gallery: Images of Uncontacted Tribes]

Surprise shipwreck
So, how did they get there? The researchers aren't sure. The fact that there were only 30 women, and likely no more than that of men, means it probably wasn't intentional, Cox said. He suggests that a shipping vessel, which can hold up to 500 people, could have capsized, and its travelers could have ended up on the shores of the African island.

"I wouldn't say we were sure it was an accidental voyage, but the new evidence suggests this is a good idea," Cox said.

Major ocean currents also could have pushed shipwreck survivors toward the island. During World War II, wreckage from bombings in Japan floated all the way to Africa, landing on the shores of Madagascar.

"There was even a person in a lifeboat that made it across," Cox said.

The study were published Wednesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

A basic -- and slightly acidic -- solution for hydrogen storage

ScienceDaily (Mar. 20, 2012) ? Sometimes, solutions for hard problems can turn out to be pretty basic. That's especially true for a team of researchers at the Office of Science's Brookhaven National Laboratory (Brookhaven Lab), where the solution for a hard problem they were working on turned out to be pretty basic?and also a bit acidic.

The hard problem they were working on was how to store hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen gas (H2) is a clean and powerful fuel, but it's also extremely light, which makes it difficult and costly to store. It's typically held in high pressure tanks, although researchers at another Office of Science lab recently found a possible way to keep it in naturally-formed frozen cages.

In a paper published March 18th in Nature Chemistry, researchers at Brookhaven Lab led by chemist Etsuko Fujita announced that they had found a safe and reversible way to store hydrogen under mild (and therefore hopefully much more economical) conditions, using a newly developed catalyst.

Their work began by seeing acids and bases in an unconventional way -- as potential carriers of hydrogen fuel. Students often learn about acids and bases as part of their science fair projects. The 'volcanic' reaction of vinegar (a mild acid) and baking soda (a mild base) has given many students an early interest in the sciences. That was true for Jonathan Hull, a lead researcher on the paper, who was intrigued by seeing a similar reaction blow the corks off wine bottles.

However, many acids and bases are actually watery solutions filled with hydrogen. In an acidic solution, the hydrogen atoms wander free. They're usually missing their electron too, which gives them a positive charge (atoms and molecules with either a positive or a negative charge are called ions). In a basic solution, the hydrogen atoms are usually connected with something else, a negative ion of some sort. And yes, when an acid and a base react with each other, they typically create something neutral, like water.

The catalyst created by researchers at Brookhaven Lab connects hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide, "storing" the hydrogen linked to (adduct to) carbon dioxide in a mildly basic solution. The reaction can be reversed -- and the hydrogen fuel released -- by adding a bit of acid. The entire process can be run, and easily reversed, in a watery solution under mild temperatures and pressures with no toxic byproducts, and at a faster rate than any previous catalyst.

As a consequence, Brookhaven Lab's new catalyst might be used in future hydrogen fuel vehicles, though additional testing will be needed to see if it can be economically scaled up to industrial production. It may show up in other high powered systems too -- time and technology will tell.

This new catalyst shows the best of the Office of Science and its labs at work: Researchers taking on truly challenging problems, and finding basic (and sometimes slightly acidic) solutions.

Better hydrogen storage process unveiled

Scientists create a chemical switch to catch and release useful gas

Web edition : Monday, March 19th, 2012

The dream of using hydrogen gas as a clean fuel, on a large scale, just got a little bit closer. Chemists have developed a new molecule that can drive chemical reactions to store and release hydrogen under mild temperatures and pressures.

?It?s a step towards getting a hydrogen economy, towards getting to a place where we can realistically look at ways of using hydrogen,? says Jonathan Hull, a research chemist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y. Hull and his colleagues describe the findings online March 18 in Nature Chemistry.

No harmful emissions are released when hydrogen is burned; only water and energy are produced. But transporting useful quantities of hydrogen gas requires keeping it at very high pressures, a process that takes a lot of energy. For these reasons, scientists are interested in finding safer, easier ways to store hydrogen.

In the new study, Hull?s team created a water-soluble molecule that contains atoms of the metal iridium. That new molecule triggers hydrogen to be converted to a form that remains stored in liquid, even at low pressure. Adding a base such as baking soda to water along with this molecule, which acts as a catalyst, turns the storage process on. The scientists think that the molecule?s special chemical limbs, called hydroxyl groups, help break apart the bonds between two hydrogen atoms so hydrogen can be stored as a liquid.

What?s more, the catalyst can also drive the opposite process. Adding an acid to the solution released hydrogen gas from its storage liquid.

By measuring the amounts of starting ingredients and end results for these reactions, the team found that this molecular switch efficiently packed and unpacked hydrogen. Also, the catch and release processes could be carried out at lower temperatures and pressures than other, previously developed chemical switches that trigger these reactions.

The work ?is an advance that will direct research in the future,? says Amanda Morris, a chemist at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. She adds that the hydrogen packing and unpacking reactions described in the study could have potentially useful applications in making hydrogen-fueled cars.
