Fixing Jim Rome is Burning

One thing that I started doing during the past year was listen to Jim Rome?s nationally-syndicated radio show. I was hooked immediately. While Rome may have lost some firepower over the years, his show is still the best show in sports radio. The entertainment value of the radio show stands in marked contrast to his ESPN show, Jim Rome is Burning. Earlier this year, JRIB was bumped to ESPN2 full-time, the victim of ratings that couldn?t even hold up from its NFL Live lead-in, let alone carry them to Around the Horn, and it?s easy for me to see why. It feels like it?s simply going through the motions each day, going through the same cookie-cutter pattern, like it doesn?t really care anymore. It?s a far cry not only from the radio show, but from its very earliest days, when it was launched as an hour-long show, Rome is Burning, with considerable fanfare.

What makes matters worse is that, strangely enough, many if not all of the takes on JRIB are essentially regurgitated from the radio show, which means if you listened to the radio show earlier, you have zero reason to watch JRIB to listen to the same takes again, only made worse somehow. How could the exact same takes that are so entertaining on the radio show be so boring on JRIB? Here are some modest suggestions for revitalizing JRIB and making it a more worthwhile watch each day, bringing it up to, or at least close to, the level of the radio show:

Overhaul the opening segment. While Rome is always known for his rapid-fire style, when reading takes on JRIB he seems to be on a complete 5-Hour Energy buzz and reading his takes off a teleprompter almost in monotone. Instead of being a talking head staring into a camera, perhaps in the opening segment Rome should be sitting in the easy chair he uses for the ?Alone with Rome? and ?The Forum? segments. It might help him seem less robotic. What should also help is ditching the music playing in the background during his takes, which comes off as distracting; ditching the music might help the takes feel more naturalistic, the segment less artificial. Ditching the music could also allow Rome to make smoother transitions between takes, rather than have different pieces play for each take. More radically, Rome could adopt a new style for JRIB and write entirely separate takes just for that show. Whatever he goes with, Rome should feel like he?s simply shooting the breeze about sports with us, not rattling off a script as fast as he can.

Get a helper cohost. Perhaps part of the problem is that, while both introducing the story and giving a take on it works on the radio, it causes everything to blur together on TV. Since moving to ESPN2, JRIB has arguably been put to shame by the program airing before it, the new show Dan LeBatard is Highly Questionable. One key element that helps DLHQ work is the character (and ultimately, he is a character) of Papi, who serves as LeBatard?s foil and, more importantly, sets him up by introducing the topic for him to riff on. All of ESPN?s other talk shows use multiple people in similar fashion. Perhaps JRIB would flow better if he brought in one of the people who help run his radio show to introduce each topic and set him up to give his take on each one.

Tie the segments closer together, and give Rome more of a presence in each one. Currently the sequence of a typical episode of JRIB goes like this: Rome?s takes on the day?s sports stories, an interview segment, shooting the breeze with another personality, a once-a-week ?correspondent? piece from an athlete, and one to three ?final burn? takes. These segments have little connection with each other other than sports and Jim Rome himself, and the Correspondent piece seems particularly superflouous and its purpose should be rethought. Part of the problem is that during Alone with Rome, The Forum, and the Correspondents, Rome is ultimately a cypher who stays in the background while the guest is the star of the show.

While Rome tries to get topical guests on his radio show, his guests on JRIB are often whoever he can get who?s available, which isn?t the case on PTI. DLHQ manages to get away with getting the ?best available guest? by giving the interview segment its own gimmick, but Alone with Rome is more of a straight-up interview segment, so Rome needs to make getting better guests for it a higher priority. Rome occasionally gives his own opinions during the Forum segment, but the focus there is clearly on the guest?s opinions, not his own, and the two are largely superfluous to one another. Perhaps the opening segment is so bad at providing a backbone for the show that simply fixing its issues could go far in tying the rest of the show together, but if not Rome needs to consider what he can do to make himself more of the star of the show, possibly including?

Consider ditching the Forum, or make it an occasional segment replacing Alone with Rome. If I recall correctly, when JRIB started the Forum was a full-fledged roundtable of panelists debating the day?s sports stories. Now, with the Forum taking up an entire segment on a half-hour program devoted to one guy giving a second opinion often on the same topics Rome covered in the opening segment, it seems like more of a waste of valuable time. Consider freeing the time up for another segment like the first one on two or three topics, allowing the opening segment to breathe more and allowing Rome to slow down his takes. Alternately, save some topics to be covered only in the Forum and give Rome closer to equal billing in that segment; the topic taken from Twitter in each Forum in the ESPN2 era may be a step in this direction.

Rome should take his show?s move to ESPN2 as a wake-up call that JRIB is broken and needs fixing. Wikipedia claims that Rome has, in the past, threatened to abandon his radio show entirely and do only a TV show. If so, I hope that JRIB as it exists today is not what such a show would look like. The best thing that could probably happen to JRIB would probably be going back to an hour-long show, which probably can?t be had without leaving ESPN. Short of that, Rome needs to find a way to get the show to work within the time that he has.

PFT: Bears' Briggs spills beans on Pro Bowl selection

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees celebrates after his team defeated the Atlanta Falcons in New OrleansReuters

The Saints can still improve their playoff position by one spot, if they beat the Panthers and the 49ers somehow lose to the Rams in St. Louis.? (In the same way that the Saints, you know, somehow lost in St. Louis.)? Both games will be played at the same time, which could prompt Saints coach Sean Payton to do some scoreboard-watching, given that two of his key players ? cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and tight end Jimmy Graham ? suffered injuries in a meaningless regular-season finale in 2010.

The fact that quarterback Drew Brees sits only 190 yards ahead of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady raises the stakes.? Since the Pats need to beat the Bills to claim the No. 1 seed (the other contenders, the Ravens and Steelers, play at 4:15 p.m. ET), Brady will likely play most if not all of the game, and he could easily swipe the record if Brees plays less than 60 minutes.

On Tuesday, Payton addressed the situation, ultimately explaining that he?ll make a decision later in the week.? He dropped no specific hints as to the direction in which he?s leaning, but the bulk of his comments suggests that Brees and the rest of the regulars will play.

?I know I am twice shy when the ball comes near me on the sidelines,? Payton told the local media as to the possibility of getting gets injured in a meaningless game.? ?I have been bitten.? I think we just have to be smart.? We are playing well, with some momentum.? Each year is different.? We will look at that closely.?

Payton said he doesn?t know whether he?ll have someone keep an eye on the 49ers-Rams game.? ?Last year, we tried to go that route of paying attention to the game,? Payton said.? ?One of the challenges always is your roster to begin with.? You guys know that.? We sat players before.? It?s always hard because you don?t really have enough.? It?s not the preseason where you have 80, you only have 53.? We will try to do what is best for the team.?

But is it best for the team to have Brees hold off Brady?? Payton has a strong sense of history, but whether Brees holds the single-season passing yardage record for six days or 60 years has zero relevance to the team?s goals.

?I?m not really aware of the space between the two,? Payton said.? ?I am probably better off not knowing.? That being said, what we have to do is keep playing.? The playoffs are close.? How do we put ourselves in the best position to play well and put ourselves in an opportunity to win a championship?? That?s not always what is popular.? Two years ago in 2009, a lot of people in this room criticized us for resting players at Carolina.? It was what we needed to do as a team.? You make decisions.? They are not always right.? You try to make them with the right things to help your team.? Last night was one of those situations.? This upcoming game will be one of those situations.? It?s part of what we do.? It?s part of coaching.? It?s part of sport.?

Setting ? and holding ? records is part of what they do, too.? If Payton didn?t know the space between the two players, he likely will.? Even if he doesn?t know the number, he surely senses that it?s close enough to compel Brees to play a full game.

And so I?d be shocked if Brees and the rest of the starters don?t play a full game.? With Brees unlikely to wrest the MVP award from Aaron Rodgers, setting ? and keeping ? that record arguably becomes more important to Brees, to Payton, and to the rest of the franchise.

The best credit union for a small business

I see there are some great questions regarding credit unions for individuals, but does anyone have any experience/opinion on credit unions for small businesses? We were using WAMU, then BOA, and hated them both. Specifically, we're interested in ease of deposits and charge card systems for clients to make payment.

NBA Kicks Off Shortened Season On Christmas Day

LINDA WERTHEIMER, HOST:

Professional basketball was on a long break because of the lockout, but on Christmas Day the NBA kicks off its shortened season with a five-game package featuring exciting games and glittering superstars. There's a rematch between defending champion Dallas and everybody's favorite team to hate, the Heat from Miami. Younger folks ready to break through playing for Chicago and Oklahoma City are in action, as are the storied Boston Celtics and the L.A. Lakers.

To preview these games we turn to NPR's Tom Goldman. Good morning, Tom.

TOM GOLDMAN, BYLINE: Hi, Linda.

WERTHEIMER: So will this Christmas Day offering help fans forgive and forget all this nasty labor talk?

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

GOLDMAN: Oh, they'll forgive. You know, sports fans have very high tolerance for abuse. So even though it was galling for many to hear players and owners sniping about many millions of dollars during a down economy, the promise of a Lebron dunk or a Kevin Durant three-pointer will light up TVs from coast to coast. Now, forgetting the lockout may be tougher when we see the product starting on Sunday.

WERTHEIMER: How so?

GOLDMAN: Well, this rush to a Christmas Day opening meant shortening training camps by half and cutting the pre-season from eight games per team to two. And then you had lots of players switching teams during a quickie free-agency trading period. So, a number of teams won't be in sync right away and that could mean sloppy basketball and maybe more injuries because of this rush into full tilt action.

WERTHEIMER: Now the last game, Christmas Day, has the Los Angeles Clippers playing Golden State. Now in past years, this would hardly been a marquee matchup. I gather there must be some new excitement about the Clippers.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

GOLDMAN: Just think about what you said, pre-season excitement about the Clippers, amazing but true. They are one of the most maligned pro sports franchises in history - from their bad play on the court to bad ownership. But now the Clippers, and not the Lakers, are creating this big buzz in L.A. and really throughout the league. And it's largely due to one player, the game's best point guard, Chris Paul. He came to the Clippers via trade last week and that was, of course, after NBA commissioner David Stern nixed a deal that would have sent Paul to the Lakers.

Now like any great point guard, he makes his teammates better. And amazingly, again, for the Clippers, they have made smart moves and laid out the money to surround Chris Paul with really good teammates. They've got the great veteran guard Chauncey Billups and a former all star forward Caron Butler, and last year's Rookie of the Year power forward Blake Griffin. He's known for his huge dunks. But during short pre-season, showed off a variety of great offensive moves.

WERTHEIMER: So that sounds good, but you think the Clippers could actually get to post-season?

GOLDMAN: Well, you know, no one's crowning them the next champion, or even NBA finalists. There are a number of good teams in a wide open Western Conference - Dallas, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, even the Lakers. But if the Clippers stay healthy and they can blend that talent with some mental toughness, they could win and they could make a run in the playoffs.

WERTHEIMER: Now, of course, in the East you still have that big trio down in Miami - Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James who commands most of the attention. So, what does he have to do to silence all the criticism he got last year?

GOLDMAN: Yeah. Well, you know, he's so talented and such a crowd pleaser. But his worth as a player has been distilled down to this: Can he deliver in a clutch to win a title, which he didn't do last year. And that's what he has to do. And that's what's expected of you when you're called The Chosen One and King James.

Now he spent some of his off season working on his post play - near the basket - with one of the great former post players in NBA history, Hakeem Olajuwon. We should see a new, improved LeBron James this season, but vindication won't come until June.

WERTHEIMER: NPR's sports correspondent Tom Goldman. Thank you, Tom.

GOLDMAN: You're welcome.

Device warns of catastrophic failure in lithium-ion batteries, robots celebrate

"Catastrophic lithium-ion battery failure" are five words Malfunctioning Eddie never wants to hear, and may not have to, thanks to a new sensor developed by the folks at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Despite the popularity of lithium-ion batteries in everything from consumer electronics to hybrid and electric vehicles, they have been associated with a phenomenon called "thermal runaway" -- known to cause overheating and potentially, fire. The newly developed device measures the electrical parameter of the cell, which is an indicator of whether the internal layer temperatures are getting too toasty. The best part? The warning comes before the heat can reach the surface and cause catastrophic failure, perhaps saving our electronics from a fate like the one in the video after the break.

LMFAO, Mindless Behavior, More Share Holiday Gifts Not To Buy

'Fruitcake, it's the most disgusting, repulsive food ever,' Travie McCoy tells MTV News.
By Christina Garibaldi

Don't panic, but you only have a few days left to find the perfect holiday gift. Yes, it can be daunting, and yes, it can drive you crazy, but we at MTV News are here to help. But instead of telling you what to buy this season, we asked some of your favorite stars at this year's annual Z100 Jingle Ball concert in New York to tell us what not to put on your holiday gift list.

"The worst gift you could give somebody is a gift that you got from them," Princeton from Mindless Behavior told MTV News.

Regifting is also a big no-no for Hot Chelle Rae's Nash Overstreet, who said, "[The worst gift] is a gift that you got that you didn't want, so you gave it to them."

Well, if Overstreet is looking to regift anything for his fellow bandmembers, it seems Ian Keaggy might have given him a not-so-subtle hint. "If you're a girl and you're looking for just a random guy gift," Keaggy said, "a safe bet perhaps [is] socks and boxers."

Big Time Rush's James Maslow agrees. "Cool funky socks, or if it's really cold out and they're warm socks, that could be a good gift."

If you are planning on baking instead of buying for someone this holiday season, Gym Class Heroes' Travie McCoy says stay away from the fruitcake. "Fruitcake, it's the most disgusting, repulsive food ever," McCoy said. "Who decided to put gummy bears in bread?"

But what is the absolute worst thing you can give someone? Nothing at all. "The worst is when you forget to give a gift and they got you a gift," LMFAO's Redfoo said. "So no gift is the worst gift."

What is the one gift you should never give someone? Let us know in the comments.

ITC sides with Apple, bans sale and import of some HTC phones (updated)

ITC ruling
The ITC has issued a ruling in favor of Apple Inc., banning the sale and import or certain HTC phones in the US. The ruling, which was widely expected to finally be handed down today after being delayed twice, finds that HTC violates a pair of claims patents a patent held by the Cupertino company regarding the formatting of data (such as phone numbers) in otherwise unstructured documents (such as emails) allowing users to interact with them. The ban isn't scheduled to be enacted until April 19th of 2012, giving HTC and Google plenty of time to address the court's concerns. The Taiwanese manufacturer could also simply remove the feature from its phones, though, the ability to interact with such information across apps, such as tapping a phone number in an email to dial it, is an ability most consumers expect their devices to support.

The International Trade Commission did not find that HTC violated two other patents in question, which related to realtime signal processing and would have been much more difficult for HTC to circumvent. Of course, this saga is far from over and we expect these two (along with practically every other mobile manufacturer on the planet) to continue to duke it out in the courts as opposed to in our stores.

You can check out the full PDF of the ruling at the source.

Update: Looks like HTC already has a plan in place to make it all better. Not shocking, but there it is, check out its statement after the break.

Update 2: HTC reached out to us to clarify that the company was not found to be violating a pair of patents, but that it was "two claims in a single patent."

Democrat drops out of race for Texas Senate seat (AP)

AUSTIN, Texas ? Retired Lt. Gen. Ric Sanchez, the sole major Democratic candidate in the race to replace Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, said Friday he is dropping out of the Texas race because of "pressing personal challenges" and a lack of funds.

In an email to supporters Friday afternoon, Sanchez thanked those who had encouraged him to run but said he needed to put his family first.

"I am very grateful for the strong support and encouragement I have received from supporters across the country and the wonderful Texans I have met in every part of our great state," Sanchez said. "However, pressing personal challenges, coupled with the recent loss of our home due to fire and lagging fundraising numbers make a statewide election campaign impractical for me at this time."

While the Republican field to replace Hutchison is extremely crowded, Sanchez was the only major candidate from the Democratic party.

Hutchison announced earlier this year that she was retiring.

Many Democratic strategists hoped that Sanchez, who was born in the Rio Grande Valley, could marshal votes from the state's growing Hispanic population. But many liberals felt he was a flawed candidate because he was the commanding general in Iraq when the abuses against Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison took place.

The official filing period for prospective candidates ends Monday. But because of ongoing litigation over political redistricting in Texas, the filing period will reopen after a federal court approves a final district map, likely in late January, and remain open until Feb. 1.

A new Democratic candidate could emerge once the courts decide the districts for the Texas House, Texas Senate and U.S. Congress. If the court's decision hurts Democratic chances for Congress, some of those politicians might consider switching to the Senate race.

No Democrats hold statewide office in Texas, and the predominantly Republican state is unlikely to elect a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 2012. But Democratic leaders had hoped to run at least a mildly competitive candidate to force Republicans to spend money on the Senate race.

The Texas Democratic Party had no immediate comment Friday evening.

US hits Saudi militant with sanctions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration has added a senior member of a Lebanese militant group to the list of global terrorists subject to U.S. sanctions.

The State Department says Saudi citizen Saleh al-Qarawi is a high-ranking operative for the Abdullah Azzam Brigades in Lebanon. The group has claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Japanese oil tanker last year and for several rockets fired from Lebanon into Israel.

The move freezes any assets held by al-Qarawi in the United States and bans Americans from doing business with him.

The department said that before moving to Lebanon, al-Qarawi fought American forces in Fallujah, Iraq, and worked alongside killed al-Qaida in Iraq chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

It said al-Qarawi is wanted for extradition by Saudi Arabia for extremist activity.

Morgan Stanley settles with MBIA, sets $1.8 billion charge (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Morgan Stanley (MS.N) agreed to give up insurance claims against MBIA Inc (MBI.N) in exchange for a $1.1 billion payment from the ailing insurer, ending a two-year legal fight over guarantees on mortgage bonds.

The deal, announced on Tuesday, is the latest move by Morgan Stanley Chief Executive James Gorman to clear away vestiges of the financial crisis and put the Wall Street bank on a more stable path.

The settlement will cause Morgan Stanley to take a $1.2 billion charge in the fourth quarter after accounting for a tax benefit, but it will also remove risky assets from company's balance sheet that have led to big swings in its quarterly earnings over the past four years.

Additionally, the deal will shore up Morgan Stanley's capital levels under tougher rules that start coming into effect in 2013.

In a statement, Gorman said the settlement had been a "top priority" for Morgan Stanley this year, "consistent with our efforts to build capital and de-risk the balance sheet."

The settlement stems from credit-default swaps (CDS) that Morgan Stanley had entered with MBIA several years ago to protect against losses on mortgage bonds.

MBIA, a bond insurer, historically focused on municipal bonds but as the U.S. real-estate market heated up last decade, it sold large numbers of CDS on mortgage-backed securities and other structured finance products.

MBIA's bets on CDS started souring as the financial crisis ramped up, leading the company to split itself into two parts: a municipal guarantee business and a structured finance unit. MBIA announced the restructuring in 2009 after receiving approval from state insurance regulators.

A group of 18 banks, including Morgan Stanley, objected to the restructuring in court, arguing that it might leave the insurer unable to pay out its structured finance obligations.

As part of the settlement, Morgan Stanley agreed to end its legal objections to MBIA's restructuring, and MBIA agreed to drop a lawsuit pertaining to the quality of the bonds underlying the CDS contracts.

MBIA will pay Morgan Stanley $1.1 billion to settle legal claims, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The insurer's structured finance division, known as MBIA Insurance, will pay the settlement using a loan from its municipal bond division called National Finance, according to another person familiar with the deal.

All but five banks have settled with MBIA, including HSBC Holdings PLC (HSBA.L), Royal Bank of Scotland PLC (RBS.L) and Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N). Those still pursuing claims include Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) and UBS AG (UBSN.VX).

An MBIA spokesman confirmed that there was a settlement with Morgan Stanley, but declined to comment on the $1.1 billion settlement figure.

"We are continuing to work toward resolving all the litigation," said Kevin Brown, a spokesman for MBIA. "We're talking to most, but not all, the parties."

Robert Giuffra Jr, a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell and lead counsel for banks that are still suing MBIA, said the plaintiffs will continue to fight its restructuring.

Benjamin Lawsky, financial services superintendent for the state of New York, said his agency will continue to work with the remaining companies and MBIA to seek resolutions.

A WIN FOR BOTH SIDES

The Morgan Stanley-MBIA settlement will benefit both parties, investors said, though it may represent a bigger win for MBIA.

MBIA shares closed up 0.7 percent on Tuesday at $11.48, having hit $12.60 after the deal announcement. Morgan Stanley fell 1.4 percent to end the day at $15.17, but had risen as high as $16.55 earlier in the day.

The settlement will remove a big swing factor from Morgan Stanley's quarterly earnings results. Because the CDS contracts turned MBIA into a major counterparty of the bank, the widening or narrowing of its credit spreads resulted in big non-cash losses and gains.

Getting rid of MBIA exposure will free up $5 billion worth of capital for Morgan Stanley and improve its Tier 1 common capital ratio by 75 basis points under upcoming rules. Under existing rules, it will reduce Morgan Stanley's Tier 1 common ratio by 30 basis points.

Gorman has been on a mission to improve Morgan Stanley's balance sheet this year, in part to ease investor concerns about the bank's exposure to the European sovereign debt crisis.

In April, Gorman struck a deal with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, a major investor and partner, to convert 7.8 million Morgan Stanley preferred shares into 385.5 million shares of common stock. That move lifted Morgan Stanley's capital ratios.

Gorman has also overseen the dismantling of risky trading operations to comply with a new financial reform rule, wound down other risky assets and implemented higher pricing for over-the-counter derivatives products to reflect higher risk and cost. He has also adjusted Morgan Stanley's funding model to reduce its exposure to riskier, short-term lending.

Still, its shares are down 43 percent so far this year, compared with a 32 percent decline for the NYSE Arca Securities Broker/Dealer Index.

Walter Todd, a portfolio manager at Greenwood Capital, said Gorman's efforts have been noticed but that concerns remain over Europe and the business model of large investment banks. Todd exited his firm's Morgan Stanley position last week to reduce volatility in the portfolio.

"I think it's nice to get this behind them and check it off as something not to worry about anymore , but I wouldn't go out and buy the name because of this agreement," he said.

For MBIA's part, the deal removes a big hurdle standing in the way of its restructuring, at a lower cost than if Morgan Stanley had pursued its claims in full.

Morgan Stanley had $2.7 billion worth of net exposure to MBIA's derivative contracts as of September 30, according to a quarterly regulatory filing. The bank is writing off $1.8 billion worth of the underlying debt, which will lead to the $1.2 billion charge after taxes.

But Manal Mehta, a founding partner of the hedge fund Branch Hill Capital, which owns MBIA shares, estimates that the total notional amount of the underlying securities was more than $10 billion -- meaning that MBIA's $1.1 billion settlement may represent just 10 percent of the potential cost.

"This is a fantastic deal for MBIA," said Mehta.

A Morgan Stanley spokesman declined to disclose the notional amount of underlying securities. Mehta extrapolated his estimate from disclosures by Bank of America.

(Reporting by Lauren Tara LaCapra in New York,; additional reporting by Karen Freifeld in New York; Editing by Lisa VonAhn, Dave Zimmerman, Dan Wilchins and Steve Orlofsky)

(This story was corrected in paragraph eight to say MBIA regulators allowed the company to split, rather than were forced to split the company)

Obama in Iowa City in 2010 (Charles Dharapak/AP)

The road to health care reform?what the Republican presidential candidates routinely call "Obamacare," and likely the central issue of the fall 2012 campaign?began in Iowa.

In May 2007, Barack Obama was a United States senator and Democratic presidential candidate who was losing to Hillary Clinton by double digits in national polls, when he unveiled the first blueprint of what became the most comprehensive overhaul of the nation's health insurance laws in history.

Speaking to a mostly friendly audience at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Obama spoke of the plight of average Americans who tried to keep up with the rising costs of medical care.

And when Obama signed his health care bill into law in March 2010, he celebrated by returning to Iowa City, where he touted the state's influence in helping to pass the legislation. "Because of you," Obama told the cheering crowd, "this is the place where change began."

Nearly two years later, Iowans' reaction to that change is mixed, as the state isn't the friendly territory it used to be for Obama?especially on health care.

Darlyne Neff, a 77-year-old breast cancer survivor whose efforts to pass the law landed her a White House invitation and a mention in Obama's 2010 speech in Iowa City, told Yahoo News that she still supports the law's overall goals. But she thinks the bill is "too expensive" and needs to be tweaked.

"We've got to do more to cut costs," Neff said. "We're trying to cover everything now, and everything into the future, and we simply aren't going to be able to afford that ?... Everybody needs to be covered, but there has to be limits ... We can't pay for everything."

Red velvet polka dot cookies

Festive red velvet cookies add a colorful touch to holiday cookie plates.

Red Velvet Cake is a real childhood memory for me. I have an aunt who makes a great one. But it was definitely not trendy or cool or in. Red Velvet was seriously down-home, real country food. It wasn?t even a standard on diner menus. But that all seems to have changed.

I am dubious about this hipsterfied version. I have had some really, really bad red velvet made by places that charge huge amounts for small cupcakes, and advertise that it?s the best-selling flavor. I even had a red velvet cupcake in London, but it was an abomination. In fact, it seems that anything with a little red food coloring in it is now called ?red velvet? and earns a premium and a lot of attention. No, I don?t like this trend at all.

But Christmas is different. We all love fun and whimsical at Christmas, and bright red sweets just fit the bill perfectly. These cookies with their chocolate-y richness, ruby color and festive white snowdrops will delight kids, but they will also make an impression at a cookie swap.

Red Velvet Polka Dot Cookies
Makes 30 cookies

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (1-ounce) bottle red food coloring
1 (11-ounce) white chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until light-colored.? Add the eggs and vanilla and beat until fluffy and light.

In a small bowl, use a fork to mix together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Use the fork to break up lumps of cocoa powder. Add the dry ingredients to the butter in the mixer a little at a time, mixing well after each addition and occasionally scraping down the sides of the bowl. When the dough is thoroughly mixed, add the food coloring, beating until the dough is a dark red color. If you have some place important to be or just had a manicure, I?d recommend wearing gloves. That red food coloring will show up in the oddest places. When the dough is evenly colored, stir in all but about 1/2 cup of the white chocolate chips until mixed in.

Scoop the dough onto the lined baking sheets using a 2 tablespoon cookie scoop or spoon. Place the cookies apart from each other to allow room for spreading. You will have enough dough to use on a third pan of cookies after these have cooked. Wet your fingers and lightly press down the top of each cookie mound, then press the remaining white chips into each cookie to create the polka dots. The cookies spread, so press a lot of chips into the cookies.

Bake the cookies for 10?12 minutes until firm in the center. Cool on the pans for a few minutes until firm, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.? When one pan has cooled, repeat with the rest of the cookie dough. Stored in an airtight container, the cookies will keep for several days.

A day in the life of an Apple store

The cast members are ready. The curtain goes up. It's showtime at the Apple (AAPL) Store in Palo Alto.

Here comes our first contestant for Stump the Genius Bar Geniuses: Bill Mainzer, of Portola Valley. He's clutching a MacBook Pro the size of a radiator. He looks worried.

"I've got a glitch," he says. "It keeps shutting itself off."

It's 10 a.m. on a recent weekday. For the next 11 hours, the 40 or so "Specialists" and "Creatives" and "Geniuses" employed inside this glass-skinned jewel box on University Avenue will eagerly welcome the Bill Mainzers of the world, cheerfully put out one fire after another, soft-sell first-timers on the mesmerizing features of the new iPad 2, and essentially play starring roles in one of the biggest blockbusters in the annals of American retail.

In a rare outbreak of media outreach, Apple offered a Mercury News reporter and photographer a close-up, day-in-the-life look at what some consider the chain's flagship, because it's just down the street from former CEO Steve Jobs' home.

As anyone who's ever stepped inside one of Apple's 360 worldwide outlets knows, these are not simply stores. They are products in their own right, with all the design dazzle of a MacBook Air. They kick out

sales revenue that would make most shopkeepers salivate. And they are a destination, a veritable Tahiti for geeks.

On this day in downtown Palo Alto, the Apple Store will also serve as day care center, lonely hearts club, homework haven, temporary homeless shelter, startup incubator and recording studio.

It's 10:10 a.m. and in walks Francesca Freedman, of Menlo Park, trying to swap the white iPhone 4S she bought for her boyfriend "because he wants a black one." Alas, black ones are apparently in short supply. So despite the window poster boasting "The Perfect Gifts are Perfectly Easy to Get," Freedman will still be trying to make that swap seven hours later when she returns to wait in the nightly queue for available phones.

Still, smiling specialists like Anush Venkatesan and Bianca Antonio stand ready this morning to help, or at least offer moral support to haggard Apple fans. A clutch of customers gathers at the Genius Bar, where Apple's best and brightest turn loose their inner Sherlock Holmes on flummoxed customers.

An hour later, retired college professor Francina Nur is ready to pay for her new MacBook Pro. "I came for an iPad appointment," Nur confesses. "But I realized when I got here that I should upgrade my laptop." Her clerk, dressed in a red shirt that matches the red signage on the walls, is wearing a Secret Service-type earpiece that presumably allows him to communicate with every other red-shirted, wired-up clerk.

Olivia Viveros, a stay-at-home mom from Palo Alto, sidles up to the Genius Bar. What'll she have? "My iMac is slow at times," she says. "It keeps crashing, but I think it's because my kids keep downloading stuff. I need to clean it out." Like many here today, Viveros is a repeat customer and a huge fan of the store and its staff. "My kids love this place, too. What I love most is that you can touch and play with all the products. It's a clean, comfortable space, and no other store compares. Sony tried, but it just isn't the same."

Shortly after 1 p.m., visiting Swiss banker Isabelle Montegut, 38, is asking how she can set up an iTunes account based in the United States and access it from Geneva. She says she appreciates Apple's "secrecy and security. We try to do the same in banking: be discreet."

No problem there. Apple is as notoriously secretive about its retail operations as it is about its products. Curious about the size of the store? Apple won't release square footage. Wonder how many customers come through here each day? Apple won't say. Of the 100-plus staffers, how many are women? No comment.

After a midafternoon lull, the store comes alive. Only a few of the 40 stools are unoccupied. Sarah Westbook, owner of Palo Alto's Piccadilly Pets, is at a horseshoe-shaped desk in the back where classes sometimes are given, working with an Apple specialist on setting up her new online -- and top-secret -- business.

"I come in a couple times a week," she says, as a clerk fetches a cup of water for her 9-year-old Weimaraner, Luna, the Apple fandog at her side. "I love the people who work here and they love my dog."

As the daylight fades, the neon "waxing" and "massage" signs from across University Avenue reflect in the Apple Store windows, mixed in with Santa Claus chatting away on a super-sized iPad window display. Kathleen Schwartz waits for an appointment to have her broken MacBook looked at -- "It's getting wiggly," she says -- while daughters Ellen, 9, and Elisabeth, 7, play a "Dora the Explorer" video game in the children's pod, both dressed like fairies. ("Every day for them," says Mom, "is fairy day.")

Near the front, silver-haired regular Rosemary Halley playfully grabs the arm of her young specialist, Venkatesan, while they talk about whether her "hunt-and-peck" typing style would work on the iPad she's lusting after. "He's the best," exclaims Halley, who would not give her age but admits, "I stopped counting my birthdays quite a while ago." She says the staff "never hard-sells me on anything. The products sell themselves."

Dr. Ginny Fong is not quite so sold. "I'm so frustrated after spending three hours here," Fong says as she leaves the store empty-handed. She says neither Apple nor Sprint, her carrier, could figure out a problem with her new iPhone, with each company blaming the other.

Fong, though, seems to be in the minority as the sun goes down on another exciting day in Apple land. Middle-schooler James Pedersen works on an essay, a squatter on a huge MacBook Pro in the back. ("When they catch me," he says, "they take away my chair to try and make me leave.") Geetha and Vijay Kancharia, of Santa Clara, wait while specialist Chico Patel closes the 25 apps that had been quietly running and eating up their iPhone's battery life. And the entire staff stops to applaud and hug a departing employee as she makes her way out of the store on her last day.

And while Freedman returns as instructed to hopefully swap that white iPhone for a black one, and 8-year-old Holden Johnson takes a workshop on recording his own music using GarageBand ("I want to learn whatever the teacher teaches us," he says), darkness settles over Palo Alto and the Apple Store comes aglow like a cathedral lit up with a million candles.

From one end of the shop to the other, all but a few of the 50 customers seem enraptured, sitting or standing silently, their heads bowed in reverence toward the iPads and iPhones they hold in their fingers like rosary beads.
